Today, oh my goodness, I love this phrasal verb.

It's so good it is to water down.

To water down something.

Water.

W-A-T-E-R.

Down, D-O-W-N.

To water down something means to make it less strong, to make it weak. For example, if you have some whiskey.

Now, some people like the strong taste of whiskey, but other people, it's too strong, so they add a little bit of water or Coca-Cola or sometimes they drink some milk after they drink whiskey or they simply add ice and the ice melts and it makes the whiskey less strong.

So this is the idea to water down something.

Let's say you have a really spicy soup.

Well, you could add some water to make it less spicy.

To water down something.

But we can also use this expression in a different situation.

Listen to the dialogue.

Oh, I like that Japanese scientist.

Mitsio Kaku? Why him?

He knows how to water down difficult subjects. Ah, that's true. He's good at explaining things.
