Night has fallen on the Mojave.

What a weird time we're in.

It's weird everywhere.

It's like a virus.

A global pandemic of madness.

It's especially here, this great sickness, this thirst for blood, this lust for the blood of the young, this maniacal desire to annihilate the self, but only after soaking the ground with the blood of innocence.

Up here in the high desert, we had quite a scene Monday night in the desert.

They called it a field in the newspaper reports

because I guess there's no accepted editorial term

for a patch of open desert.

Alongside a road.

Some open desert with creosotes here and there waving their spidery arms around in the wind

a couple of Joshua trees a steady line of cars on the two lane there's an intersection here

by the middle school and a number of people have died right there in recent years just in traffic accidents.

Morons racing by at 75 miles per hour while school buses try to make a left turn, that kind of thing.

It's a pretty miserable life most of the time,

and a lot of people are determined to get out of it one way or another

by a vehicular manslaughter by a bottle of pills,

and anyway, there are memorial roadside crosses here.

On both sides of that road now.
