Summary

Plato's concept of dualism influences the church even today - without us knowing. How many of us see our bodies as "bad", souls as "good"? In this episode we break down why this view of the body not only isn't biblical, it wasn't exemplified by Christ!   Mentioned in this episode:   Love Thy Body by Nancy Pearcey: https://amzn.to/2QTBT6Y   After Class Podcast series on sex: https://afterclass.libsyn.com [https://afterclass.libsyn.com/]   My Jewish Learning on the body:  https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/lets-get-physical/

Welcome to Verity. I'm your host, Felicia Masonheimer, an author, speaker, and Bible teacher.

This podcast will help you embrace the history and depth of the Christian faith,

0:11.8

ask questions, seek answers, and devote yourself to becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ.

0:18.2

You don't have to settle for water down Christian teaching. And if you're ready to go deeper,

0:23.3

God is just as ready to take you there. This is Verity, where every woman is a theologian.

We're already in the second week of the Women's Issues series, and I am so stoked to talk about

0:39.0

what we're discussing this time, the body and sexuality. Now, this is an enormous topic.

0:45.5

I can't do it justice in 20 to 30 minutes, but I'm definitely going to try to touch on some of

0:51.2

the major points in relation to women's bodies and sexuality, because I know there are so many

0:57.8

questions surrounding these issues. Now, last week in the series, we discussed fertility,

1:03.8

pregnancy, and birth, and how the curse in Genesis 3 was not a curse on women's bodies, was not

1:11.5

a curse on women's process of birth, but that rather, it was a curse on the ground and on the

1:18.3

serpent specifically. Everything else that we experience is simply the consequence of being

1:24.8

in a cursed world. And while it might sound like semantics, it's super important that we go into

1:32.4

birth and look at our bodies and their fertility, not as something that God has specifically cursed

1:39.4

and separated from himself, but something that he is consistently and constantly redeeming with

1:45.9

his goodness. And so if you have not listened to that episode, I would encourage you to go back,

1:50.9

be sure to start there, because that's going to lay a foundation for what we talk about today

1:55.9

in regard to female bodies and sexuality. Now, when we look at the theology of the body,

2:04.2

we could get really deep into this. There's some really great books out there, Nancy Pearsie has a

2:10.0

book on the theology of the body, the Catholic Church has a book on the theology of the body,

2:15.3

and so I'm not endeavoring to redo the work they've done. I would encourage reading those resources,
