Welcome to the Trap Set, where each week we explore the lives of drummers.

I want to play something for you.

She wears a long full of me, even in the summertime. You're hearing the girl's You're hearing the glamourous life by my guest Sheila E.

This track hit number one on the dance charts in 1984 and catapulted Sheila to international pop stardom.

It was one in a string of collaborations with Prince, who co-wrote or produced much of Sheila's material during this time.

But while this era of Sheila's career may be her best known,

she was an accomplished artist in her own right,

long before she ever encountered the Purple One.

Born into a musical family, Sheila began playing percussion as a toddler, mimicking the hand movements of her father, legendary percussionist Pete Escavedo.

Sheila's uncles include songwriter Alejandro Escavedo,

punk legend Javier Escavedo, and percussionist Coke Escavedo.

And her godfather is none other than the King of Timbales, Tito Puente.

As a teenager, Sheila toured with her father's big band, Osteca.

And during her 50-year career, she's played with everyone, from Lionel Richie to Beyonce.

She's played for presidents at the White House and worked on film scores with Oscar winner Hans Zimmer.

In 2014, Sheila released her autobiography, which I read the week it came out.
