Cobham started drumming professionally as a young child in his father's band,

However, it was his tenure with Mahavishnu Orchestra, which he co-founded in 1970 with guitarist John McLaughlin,

Mahavishnu combined the harmonic sophistication of jazz, rhythmic meters from world music,
