Summary

Trigger warning: Death is mentioned in this episode.

With me today is the fantastic Stacey MacDonald, Communication Expert, Speaker, Writer, Storyteller, and Mom. Stacey has over 25 years of communication experience working with giants like JP Morgan, Coca Cola, and Disney, among many others. She is also the owner of The Modern Storyteller and Host of the P.S. Club.

Our conversation revolves around how Stacey's life changed when she found her husband dead in the living room, only 62 days after getting married. We talk about the grief stages she went through, her unfulfilling progress in the corporate world, and the moment she decided to stop being a widow to take a leap of faith and become an entrepreneur.

What You Will Learn In This Episode:

- Who Stacey MaCdonald is and what storytelling means to her

- How she navigated her grief, and why she decided to make radical changes in her life

- Why transparency and authenticity is crucial when we talk to our audience

- What are the things we should focus on to deal with adversity

After losing her husband, Stacey took a massive promotion, a dream job 500 miles away. She ended up hating that job, but it made her realise that wasn't what she wanted for her life. Stacey decided she wouldn't be someone else's Communications Manager anymore. She would take a leap of faith and start doing what she loves - helping people tell their own stories.

Hi guys and welcome to this week's podcast. I'm interviewing somebody again today, which is always very exciting. I love to talk to different people. I'm going to give you a trigger first,

0:34.4

a trigger warning. There is death mentioned. I know that some people do not like to listen

0:39.9

to things about death, so I'm giving you that trigger warning now because we will be talking about

0:43.7

that. I am here with Stacey McDonald. Stacey has a brilliant role. She helps people really get

0:51.0

their story from out of them so that they can make sure they have a real

0:56.5

connection with the people that they want to work with rather than, you know, we know that

1:02.4

people buy from people that they have, they resonate with, they have that connection with

1:06.9

that they like. It's barely ever anything to do with what they actually sell because they're

1:11.5

always more than one person that sells the same thing. And so Stacey has this great ability to be

1:16.3

able to take your story out. And I believe that Stacey has that because of her own story. So I want to

1:22.1

start there. So Stacey, tell us what happened to you that completely changed your life in 2013?

1:29.3

I was married on the 18th of October, 2013, and 62 days later, on the 19th of December,

1:39.3

I found my husband dead in the living room. Normal work day for me, came down the stairs, went into the kitchen to make myself a coffee,

1:47.8

came back through and saw him lying on the couch, and I instantly knew that he was dead.

1:54.5

But I have 20 years first aid training, autopilot, pulled him off the sofa, started to do some CPR whilst trying

2:02.9

frantically to phone 999 and felt like about six hours, but it was probably only about six minutes.

2:10.7

And the first responding paramedic came through the door and he just put his hand on my shoulder

2:16.6

and he told me to stop.
