Good morning and welcome the kid news. I'm Tori it's's Tuesday, February 19, 2019. And we begin with a rough President's Day weekend

for Southwest Airlines and many of its passengers. Over the holiday, about a hundred flights

were canceled and more than a thousand delayed after an unusually high number of aircraft couldn't fly due to maintenance issues.

And all more than 40 planes a day have been out of service.

That's more than double the usual number,

and about 5% of Southwest's entire fleet.

It got so bad the airline declared an operational emergency and told its mechanics it needs all hands on deck and

anyone who called in sick would need to provide a doctor's note or risk losing their job

Southwest has been locked in tense negotiations with its mechanics

union that has stretched out for years. President Trump is heading to South
