Good morning and welcome to kid news. I'm Tori. Today is Friday, February 16,

2024. And we begin with the Wheels in Motion for a new state law targeting

e-bikes and kids.

A California lawmaker has introduced a bill to ban eBikes for children under 12

and require older teens to pass a written test to obtain an e-bike license.

The popularity of these souped-up speedy bikes has soared in recent years,

and along with it, the number of injuries.

According to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System,

kids between the ages of 10 and 13 accounted for almost half of the nearly 4,000 injuries

that occurred between 2011 and 2020.

While eBikes can't go quite as fast as cars,

some are able to reach speeds close to 30 miles an hour.

This is California's second attempt to put the brakes on e-bikes. A similar bill proposed

last year did not make it out of the assembly. Imagine forking over rent for your school desk and chair.
