Welcome back to the next picture show, a movie of the week podcast devoted to a classic film

and the way it shaped our thoughts on a recent release. I'm Keith Phipps, here again with... Tasha Robinson. Scott Tobias.

Rachel Handler. And producer Genevieve Kosky. This week we're talking about Andrew Stanton's

2012 Mars Adventure John Carter and The Martian, a Ridley Scott film released last fall that's

since been nominated for several Academy Awards. These two films

offer the sort of study and contrast we love here at the next picture show. The Martian, like the

Andy Weir novel that inspired it, is full of complicated science, but tells a relatively simple story.

Boy meets planet. Boy straight around planet. Boy has to use logic, knowledge, and reasoning to

leave planet. John Carter, on the other hand, is pure fantasy, but creates a world so Byzantine in its intricacies that many viewers found it hard to follow, including us.

But the films are united by their heroes.

It's not hard to imagine Mark Watney using his intelligence and will to survive to navigate Burroughs Barsoom.

Similarly, assuming he had a little more scientific training,

John Carter would probably draw on the same resourcefulness to make it off the planet.
