leave planet. John Carter, on the other hand, is pure fantasy, but creates a world so Byzantine in its intricacies that many viewers found it hard to follow, including us.

But the films are united by their heroes.

It's not hard to imagine Mark Watney using his intelligence and will to survive to navigate Burroughs Barsoom.
