Summary

How's that for a title? It comes from the name Roadtreking Reporter Laura Robinson gave her Roadtrek RS Adventurous Class B RV. She calls it OLGA. That's the acronym for Old Ladies Get Around. Laura is anything but "old." But she does get around. And as a solo traveler, she's picked up lots of tips about being safe, seeing the country and enjoying the small motorhome lifestyle. Her tips are applicable to all of us who love to travel by RV. Laura is just one prt of a great episode of the Roadtreking RV podcast, filled with lots of news and traveling suggestions. Listen for yourself... [spp-player] Show Notes for Episode #13 of Roadtreking - The RV Lifestyle Podcast: In this episode of Roadtreking the RV Podcast Mike shares travel trips from Laura Robinson, a solo traveler who calls her RV OLGA - for "Old Ladies Get Around." Plus, news of a winter campout, a report on the iPhone 6 Plus and three apps that travelers can use to make sure they get the best deal LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: A listener asked how I am enjoying my iPhone6+ smartphone. To sum my answer up in eight words: “It’s the best phone I have ever had.” TRAVELING TECH TIP: Three apps to help you find bargains ‘Tis the shopping season, that’s for sure. And this year’s sales are everywhere. How do you make sure you have the best price? How do you keep track of everything? Fear not… I have some apps that will help you organize and manage your holiday shopping this year with a new efficiency. If you’re a coupon collector, get the SnipSnap app. There’s no longer a need to carry around a stack of physical coupons. Snap photos of the print coupons with your smartphone and store them within the app. You can also browse over a million coupons collected by other users.. They’re all searchable, too. At the store, call up the coupon photo at check out. That’s sure than dealing with a stack of paper coupons. If you know what you want to buy and are waiting for it to go on sale at the lowest price, ShopAdvisor is the app you need. For iPhone and Android. Want to find out if that deal really is a bargain? ShopAdvisor searches its database of millions of products in thousands of local and online retailers for best prices for your favorite gift . You can also put items on a “watch list,” alerting you when it on sale at a nearby location. I love RedLaser. It lets you know if that gift you want to buy can be bought cheaper somewhere else. Scan the product bar code with your Android, Apple or Windows phone and the RedLaser app will tell you if the item can be found at a better price at a nearby store or online. INTERVIEW: Travel tips from a solo RVer Solos, or folks traveling by themselves, make up a sizable part of the RV community.   One of them is Laura Robinson, a regular contributor to our Roadtreking.com RV travel blog. Solos do it all. And they’ve learned a lot about staying safe and being secure. Laura offers us a dozen very practical tips that are applicable to all RVers. Laura’s RV is called OLGA – “Old Ladies Get Around” Laura says: “I plan on driving her until I no longer can see over the steering wheel.” Laura recommends the AllStays app for her smartphone to find places to stay. Here are some groups Laura recommends aimed at solo travelers: RVing Women Solo net Roadtrek International Solos RV BUCKET LIST DESTINATION:- A winter campout This week, we preview an upcoming winter campout at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Jan 23-25, 2015 Tahquamenon Falls in winter Join Mike and Jennifer and Roadtreking Reporter Yan Seiner and other Roadtreking regulars for a fun time camping in the snow. Michigan DNR keeps this open all year and plows out a few sites. They have 30 amp electricity if you need it. There is NO AGENDA, NO RULES, NO NAMETAGS. We’ll have a big bonfire every night. We can drive or hike down to the excellent brewhouse/restaurant near the falls, where we’ll east dinner Friday and Saturday night. Bring cross country skis. REI and sporting goods stores rent snowshoes. Take a camera. The woods are incredible in the winter and the falls are stunning. Check out the photo I took from my last winter visit. Winter camping is not much different than summer camping. Because your RV is winterized, you have no running water. So bring a jug of water for drinking. Use antifreeze to flush the toilet. You keep the heater on, of course. But that’s about it. That and warmer clothes, boots and mittens. Who’s in? Go to the Michigan DNR camping reservation site and get your spot for the lower falls, Hemlock campground. And post under comments whether you’re coming.
