We talk a lot about serial killer profiles and profiling killers and what the profile of a killer

looks like. In fact the word profile has been thrown around so much when it comes to talking

about crime that it's been somewhat deluded down to nothing. There is no profile of a serial killer

because a serial killing is not a specific type of criminal offender. It's a description of an

act or series of acts that is someone who has killed at least two people in two different incidents.

Period. So there's no single characteristic or set of traits that will identify or create a

blueprint of what a serial killer is like. There's so much diversity among the thousands of serial

killers that we know about that it's not really possible to to say that any given trait or

behavior is a necessary or sufficient condition to identify a person as a serial killer except for

that definition that I just gave which is a definition of behavior.
