| 2:01.0 | This week we're talking about George Lucas's Star Wars, the 1977 film later retitled A New Hope, and JJ Abrams new reboot, remake, what have you, whatever you want to call it, return to the franchise, The Force Awakens. As a heads up, by the time this podcast comes out, we'll be coming up on the film having been in theaters for a month, so all spoilers are on the table, and we aren't going to be coy about some of the big ones if they happen to come up. So consider yourself warned. If you're averse to spoilers and you haven't seen the Force Awakens, tune out now. One reason it's hard to avoid talking about spoilers with the Force Awakens. Anyone who's seen a new hope will recognize it in Abrams film, which essentially throws every character element and story beat from the original into a bag, gives it a good shake, and dumps it on the table in a new configuration. As with a new hope, which is how we'll be referring to the first Star Wars for this part of the discussion, just for clarity. The Force Awakens features a lonely desert planet, a hayseed who wants to escape it, a fascist organization manned by white-armored stormtroopers, and dominated by a masked and caped black-clad villain, a rag-tag resistance fighting against it, a planet-sized world-smashing weapon, a cute robot, smuggling vital information of the rebels, and so forth and so on. It's kind of the same movie as Star Wars, A New Hope, except it's been modernized in a lot of ways, |
