And we begin with longtime California Democrat Nancy Pelosi making history once again.

In 2007, she became the first and so far only female Speaker of the House,

which is the position that leads the majority party in that Chamber of Congress.

Yesterday, she recaptured the gavel, majority party in that chamber of Congress.

Yesterday she recaptured the gavel,

reclaimed her title, and cemented her place

as the highest ranking and most powerful elected woman

in US history.

Pelosi is a mother of five and a grandmother of nine.

Sixteen members of her family were present for the speaker vote,

including granddaughter Bella Kaufman, who held hands with the 17-term lawmaker, as her grandmother cast a vote for herself.

Topping Speaker Pelosi's agenda is ending the government shutdown.

We're in day 14 and the toll on some of the nation's most

popular parks is staggering. Garbage is piling up by the ton and there's no one

around to collect it. Government workers who normally maintain the grounds have been

furloughed or temporarily placed on leave. Trash cans are overflowing and public

bathrooms are something to avoid entirely. It's estimated that Yosemite alone has 27 tons of waste

cluttering its scenic grounds and causing potential harm to the park's

wildlife. One reason there may be even more trash than usual. Workers who normally collect park

entrance fees are also on leave, meaning people are getting in for free, and that's led to

a spike in visitor traffic.
