This is Joe Wong. Welcome to the Trap Set, where each week we explore the lives of drummers.

I want to play something for you.

And the sky was made of emigest.

You're hearing the song Violet by Hole featuring my guest Patty Shemelon drums. Hole formed in Los Angeles in 1989 and released its first album Pretty on the Inside in 1991.

Upon the recommendation of Kurt Cobain, Patty joined the band for its second album, Live Through This.

A major step forward, the record balanced pop songwriting with raw, almost unhinged performances,

driven by Patty's aggressive and dynamic drumming.

Cole was not the first female-driven band to create chaotic and aggressive rock,

but they were one of the first to become

bona fide rock stars. At a time when implied cultural sexism deterred girls from choosing to play drums,

Patty Schemel was one of the few female rock drummers in the public eye, and the band was a flashpoint of a larger movement that marked a cultural shift

that has led us from an era when female drummers were exceedingly rare

to one with rock camps for girls and a magazine dedicated to women who drum.

But Patty's life hasn't been all fame and accolades.

As documented in the film hit so hard, she spent almost

a decade lost to drugs after being edged out of the band that she helped propel to fame.
