Hi there. You're listening to the Hellenistic Age podcast. Episode 5, The King is dead. Long live the king.

0:31.2

The character of Alexander the Great is as intriguing as he is complicated.

0:36.9

Alexander is an incredibly polarizing character, heavily contrasted by the various cultures he left his mark upon.

0:39.4

Chivalrous and noble, yet hedonistic and a despot, reserved and philosophic, yet prone to anger and passion.

could hardly constitute a figure of virtue. Regardless of whatever moral character he may have,

1:40.1

it is no doubt impossible to say that Alexander is not one of the most important and influential

1:45.4

figures in all of human history.

1:47.7

But the historiography from Alexander is almost entirely based upon sources written by authors

1:53.3

born long after Alexander's death.

1:56.0

The original sources written from the period have all effectively been lost over the

2:00.4

march of time.

2:02.0

Thankfully, we managed to have a collection of sources who use these original works,
