Today I'm your host, Marjorie Alexander. Today I'm excited to welcome to the show, young environmental changemaker and community

0:28.8

activist Denzel Thompson. I've actually been really excited about this interview for quite

0:33.6

some time because it is not every day that such a young person gets recognized on a national

0:38.8

level for the work that they're doing in their local community. In the case of Denzel, he had the

0:44.2

idea to create urban farms and empty lots in his own community of North Philadelphia. He received the

0:50.2

Nickelodeon Halo Award, which is given to five ordinary teens who are doing extraordinary

0:55.1

1:05.1

1:07.3

1:28.6

but I also go around. I still get back to the community. I still did my farming, even in my

1:33.2

backyard. And I also participate in various amounts of volunteering that needs help all over

1:38.0

the city, like such as, you know, animal shelters and different schools who also are in

fall off of gardening.

1:45.4

So I just hear and there move around and give advice as well.

1:49.2

Tell us a little bit about your childhood and how you grew up, because what I'm finding

1:53.4

is that a lot of people who are involved in environmental nonprofits and volunteer work

1:59.8

were introduced to nature early on growing up.

2:03.2

But that's not always a case for everybody.
