On July 26, 1948, infamous Illinois gangster Bernie Shelton – by then acting leader of the Shelton Brothers gang – was shot to death at the Parkway Tavern, a roadhouse that he owned outside of Peoria. For years after, Bernie’s ghost was said to haunt the tavern, unable to move on after a lifetime of violence, murder, and regret.
