Summary

What a difference six months makes. The last time Zelensky and Trump met in Washington we were mourning the end of America’s commitment to security in Europe and a new era of isolationism. But yesterday was a totally different story – and Zelensky deserves much of the credit for his change in tactics. Trump complimented Zelensky’s suit as he arrived at the White House, the two exchanged warm words of thanks, and while they didn’t manage to settle on anything substantial when it comes to a peace deal, there was some vague consensus on security guarantees. The stage seems set for a Trump/Putin/Zelensky trilateral. The mood seems positive but is it too soon to celebrate?

Lucy Dunn speaks to James Heale and Svitlana Morenets.

Hello and welcome to Coffee House Shots. I'm Lissy Dunn and today I'm joined by James Heel and Svetlana Mornets.

0:10.3

Kirstarmer is alongside other European leaders on his way back from D.C. after meeting with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Voljimir Zelensky last night.

0:19.7

James, what do we know so far about how yesterday's talks with Trump all went?

0:23.2

Well, as so often with these meetings, there's scant detail on kind of the specifics of any kind of agreement,

0:29.7

but broadly there were quite positive noises coming out of the White House after yesterday's meeting.

0:34.6

So from what we saw on camera, there was none of the kind of scenes we saw back in February when President Zelensky was subjected to that pretty stark treatment by

0:42.4

J.D. Vance and Donald Trump. Instead, we had much more smiles, lots of positive talk. I think clearly

0:49.7

there were some reports previously about the British potentially helping prepare the Ukrainians

0:53.8

for how you

0:54.3

handled Donald Trump. And there was noticeable Zelensky, for instance, praised Trump, I think,

0:59.4

about 20 times in kind of comments he made and was talking, for instance, thanking the first lady

1:04.6

for her letter, raising the issue of those 20,000 Ukrainian children who've been stolen by Russia.

1:10.3

But again, it all comes down to what

1:12.0

are the Europeans and the Americans going to do. Now, Trump, it seems, is open to potentially

1:16.5

putting some troops in Ukraine. And there was talk around security agreement. But again,

1:21.6

it stops short of a guarantee. And of course, the thing the Ukrainians have been after is

1:25.7

Article 5, which is, you know, you attack one country in NATO, you attack all of them.

1:30.1

And what we are still stopping short of that kind of message. So at the moment, it's very unclear. I would say that some of the briefing this morning is a little bit over the top.

1:39.8

There's a quote, for instance, in Playbook, which talks about Bada for Putin, the Europeans are all okay, everything's fine, basically. And I think that is an over exaggeration, given how we've seen Putin as able to kind of have the upper handover Trump's kind of statements, I'd say, in terms of what he said over the past six, seven months or so. And also the depression that is often given to the US president, which is that he bear the imprint to the last person he was with. So hence why, there was this whole rush on Monday to go and meet President Trump. So I think that it's far too soon to be getting out the cigars and saying, what a wonderful success. But I think if you'd offered the Europeans this, maybe on Sunday night, after some of the stuff that was coming out after the Alaska summit, they'd take it. But yeah, I mean, we still need to lower a lot more detail before we can start popping champagne corks.

2:03.1

And James mentioned that clip about Zelensky saying thank you a number of times to President Trump. We can hear that now. Thank you very much for being here. Thank you so much, Mr. President. If I can, first of all, thank you for invitation and thank you very much for your efforts,

2:39.0

personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war.

2:41.0

Thank you.
