Summary

Beating yourself up because you scroll more than you want to? Stop it. Just understand that our willpower is not strong enough to continually resist the lure of the hyper addictive smartphone. So what to do? Embrace your design power. Make it harder to use your phone. Get a lock case. Consider buying a backup 'dumb phone'. I did this and turn my smartphone off in the evenings and weekends, and the people who need me can still get in touch. It has been SO liberating!

This principle of understanding the limitations of our willpower and embracing our design power can be used to improve your life across the board - from what you eat to how you focus.

0:29.1

lock your phone away in for a few hours that's going to be much more effective right I mean that's

0:34.5

going to work I mean the simple the simple reason people do most things

0:37.8

is because they can. And the simple reason they don't is because they can't, right? So,

0:42.5

so the behavioral science lesson like 101 is if you want someone to do something, make it easier.

0:46.6

And if you don't want them to do it, make it hard. We can do this for ourselves as well as for other people.

0:51.2

Like, remove the tempter, remove the ease of access, the opportunity to engage in

0:57.8

behaviours if you don't want to do them. They keep thinking that you can put yourself into these

1:01.6

environments and I'm going to be strong. My mind is powerful. I'll be able to resist. Why make that

1:06.6

so hard for yourself? And actually, you're quite weak anyway. So anyway so you know you're kind of doomed to

1:10.9

fail just just make it harder um and that and that's what i mean by design power make it easy

1:17.5

to do the things that you want to do and harder to do the things you don't
