In 1940, a newly built suspension bridge in Washington State, the bridge was called the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, nicknamed Galloping Gertie, it was the 40s, trust me, it was hilarious back then.

It was celebrated as a modern engineering marvel.

It was sleek, beautiful, and stretched over the Puget Sound providing a vital link between communities.

But just a few months after opening, the bridge dramatically collapsed in a windstorm.

Footage shows the bridge wildly twisting and turning before breaking apart and falling into the water below.

The failure wasn't that the materials were cheap or the design looked wrong.

It failed because the engineers underestimated the importance of wind-induced vibrations.

The fundamental design flaw made the entire structure vulnerable, and eventually the bridge could not stand.
