Summary

Is it spirit or flesh? Matter or form? Symbol or symbolized? On this episode I want to argue that these questions aren't only religious questions--or rather, they're religious questions that cut right to the heart of reality. They've become newly important as anti-humanists propose to leave our embodied life as human beings behind. Discard the spirit and you get senseless matter; discard the matter and you get heartless calculation. Only with the two combined can we be fully human.

0:06.0	Okay, we have a new game show here on Young Heritage. I always like to joke that if

0:19.8	But I do want to play a different game show here on Young Heretics, and it's called yes and no.
0:25.0	I'm going to be dwelling some more today on the whole matter of icons, and last week when I was talking about icons I was talking about the way in which
0:35.8	the two quote-unquote sides of the icon debate if you want to put it that way that's
0:41.4	vastly oversimplifying but but the pro icon and the anti icon
0:46.2	position, even though they have given rise to all sorts of conflict and even struggle and death and even though this is sort of an audacious thing to say that the two sides are kind of both coming at the truth and I've been proposing that in the debate in the
1:08.3	tension in the fight in the back and forth, the truth exists.
1:13.2	In other words, you need both sides to be participating.
1:16.9	You need to be actually thinking through both sides
1:19.5	of this question, the question whether it's possible to access reality through images, or whether images are just a distraction from the real truth.
1:30.0	And you need to be thinking through this from both sides in order to get at the answer to the question because the answer really is yes and no and the debate is in some sense the truth.
1:41.2	And this is not just a religious matter. This is not just something of
1:45.0	church interest and I know a lot of my listeners myself included are Christians
1:50.2	members of church and I know that this will be of interest historically to everybody
1:54.4	but one thing I want to show today and point out to you is that it's not just
1:58.9	about whether you venerate icons or not that is it's not just about your particular theology of worship,
2:05.8	it's not about what you do in church, and as always I'm not telling you what to do in church.
2:10.9	I think there is something much deeper here. We've gone now down a rabbit hole that is very, very fruitful. That goes right down to the bottom, to the heart of major philosophical questions that are at issue today right now and I'm going to try to show that as we go through here.
2:28.0	But first I just wanted to dwell a little bit on this idea of two conflicting truths or to yes and no, the yes and no game show.
2:35.8	And the reason I want to play this game is because I think it actually is a part of the game of life.
