Hello and welcome to this day in esoteric political history from radiotopia.

My name is Jody Avergan.

This day, September 30th, 1994.

Now, listeners, before I tell you this incident,

I should just say that we do focus pretty much exclusively

on US political history in this show,

and we do get emails from time to time saying we should look at more international stories or start spinoffs in other countries and I'm a little reluctant to crack that door but sometimes you get an email about a story that you like so much and you realize, oh gosh, this didn't actually

happen in the United States or involve any U.S. figures, but still, we really should do it.

We should talk about this day in 1994 when Boris Yeltsin, the Russian president,

refused to get off his plane when it landed at Shannon Airport in Ireland.

Yelts's plane had landed, it had a taxied, they'd rolled out that little like stair thing on the wheels, right?

The Irish head of government was standing at the bottom of that little stair thing with the wheels,

ready to greet him, and the man of the hour Boris Yeltsin he never

showed he did not get off the plane so yes look the story involves Russia and

Ireland but I think it does say a lot about geopolitical relationships, post-Cold War politics, which of course has lots

of ripple effects for the United States.

So it's justified and it is our chance to paint the picture of Boris Yeltsin, who is quite the figure. So let's do it.
