In recent months academics, activists and journalists have put a spotlight on an unsettling

aspect of the otherwise welcome trend toward the increased acceptance of transgender individuals

in Western societies.

As many clinicians have noted, there has been a sharp uptick in the diagnosis of gender dysphoria,

the clinical term that describes transgenderism among children. This is controversial because many

transactivists suspect that concerns expressed over this issue are really just a

veiled form of transphobia. One journalist who has covered this extensively is New York-based

writer Jesse Single, whose summer cover story in the Atlantic magazine entitled

When Children Say Their Transgender is still being talked about.
