Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy. I'm Amy McPhee All the Best. Last week, Dr. Veronica Finn Brewey shared

powerful stories about her life in Liberia and Ghana. She mentioned the Liberian Civil War

and the time that she spent as a refugee in Ghana. And today, we are going to zoom in on that

conflict because it is an incredibly

important historical event. And the woman-led peace movement that arose during the war called

the women's mass action for peace provides critical lessons for anyone interested in breaking

down patriarchal systems and building peace and equity anywhere in the world. But too few people know

about this history. So I'm going to tell that story today. Unfortunately, the Liberian woman who

was planning to be a guest on the podcast today is sick. And I tried to find a replacement,

but was unable to because we're so close to the time that we need to air the episode. So today, it's

just going to be my voice, but I'm going to share this story with you through the words of one

of my heroes, Lima Bowie. I first heard about Lima Bowie through a film called Pray the Devil

Back to Hell. I had been interested in Liberia for several years already because we have friends who run an orphan home in Liberia

that we helped support by donating money and supporting one of the kids there by exchanging emails with her.

And so we had learned a little bit about Liberia and the devastation that happened during the Civil Wars of 1989 to 2003.

But I didn't really know the details.

And when I saw Pray the Devil Back to Hell, it absolutely floored me.

I highly, highly recommend this film to listeners.

And after watching the film, I was so moved by the topic that I read several books on the war,

including the book that I'm going to discuss today. It's a memoir called Mighty BR Powers,
