Welcome back to the Word on Fire show. I'm your host, Jared Zimmerer, the director of Outreach

0:09.0

and Mission here at Word on Fire. And as always, a warm welcome to Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop,

0:14.3

it's always good to be with you. Hey, Jared. Good to hear your voice. How the kids doing?

0:18.0

Doing well. Doing well. As always, growing fast and a little anesthesia. She's what? Seven months

0:24.3

old now. She sure is. She sure is. Living up to the her name as well. A little princess. So I know

0:31.6

that right now you're really in the throes of confirmation season in your region. How's everything

0:37.1

going? And what's really been sort of the main message you've been giving to the confirmandi?

0:41.3

Yeah, you know, I kind of like confirmation season. We do it Los Angeles all at one time. So the

0:47.7

two months after Easter, basically, we do all our confirmations. And I kind of like it that way,

0:52.4

you know, because Easter season is the natural time leading up to Pentecost. So I've done, I think

0:57.3

about 19 confirmations so far. I've got, I think, 15 or so to go. So it's kind of intense. You

1:03.3

know, you might do, I had two yesterday, for example, the weekend I had four in total. But they're

1:10.2

good. They're good. And it's great seeing these kids and their families. My message this year,

1:16.8

I've talked a lot about branding. And what I mean is literal branding because

1:21.9

confirmation is a character sacrament. And our word character comes from the Latin and the

1:28.3

Greek caractere, which means a brand. So when you would brand an animal, or I use the example of

1:34.8

the Roman army when someone joined the army, they were branded as belonging to the army and to the

1:40.6

empire. And so I say to these kids, this sacrament is a branding sacrament. It marks you as belonging

1:48.9

to Jesus, you know. And I've said to them, maybe some of you have tattoos and a tattoo brands you

1:54.9

pretty well, but just in the level of the skin. And for this life, but the brand I'm talking about

2:00.5

is forever. And it brands you at the deepest level of your soul. So that's been kind of my motif.

2:07.1

They don't belong to themselves. They belong to Christ and to his church. I think the branding
