Summary

"The Church exists to evangelize.” These words from Evangelii Nuntiandi express the very nature of our mission. But what is evangelization? And how ought we to express Christ in the culture around us? In this episode, Bishop Robert Barron answers these questions and offers advice on exactly how an evangelist can move into the culture and plant the seeds of Christ. Evangelizing the Culture is the second of the eight principles of the Word on Fire ethos. Finally, a listener calls in to ask how he might evangelize his lukewarm parents.

Topics Discussed

  • 0:17 – Intro and Bishop Barron's new award
  • 2:15 - What does it mean to "evangelize the culture"?
  • 6:40 - How can evangelizing the culture solve the problems of the Church and the culture?
  • 11:50 - How can we see Christ in our surroundings?
  • 15:24 - How do engage the culture without falling into sin?
  • 18:45 - Why was Tolkien so effective at evangelizing the culture?
  • 21:30 - How does the Church community (including the saints) serve evangelization?
  • 23:15 - What's the proper approach for drawing the world to Christ?
  • 24:38 - Question from listener: How do we re-evangelize our parents who grew up in the faith but now lack a relationship with Jesus?

Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm your host, Jared Zimmer. And as always, we have with us the one and only Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop, how are things out on the West Coast?

0:15.0

Hey Jared, they're good. They're good. It's nice and sunny and beautiful as it almost always is here in Santa Barbara.

0:22.0

Yeah, here in Texas it's starting to warm up a little bit, but it's nothing like good Santa Barbara out there. So, so Bishop, recently you visited St. Benedict's Abbey out in Kansas.

0:32.0

You received the Lumin Vita award. Can you tell us a little bit more about the award and about your visit?

0:38.0

Yeah, it was just a great joy. I think this goes back to even before I was at Bishop, I agreed to accept this award from the wonderful community of St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, Kansas.

0:49.0

And there's of course the College of St. Benedict, they're associated with it. And it's a great place, great monks, and they give this award every year as part of their big fundraising dinner.

0:59.0

And they prepare a video for the honorees. And they did a lovely video I just saw it for the first time that night, but it featured Archbishop Jim Kelliver, the retired Archbishop of Kansas, Kansas, who was my rector. He's a Chicago priest like me.

1:16.0

And he was rector of Monday Night Summary when I was a student. So, I've known him for a long, long time. He's a great hero of mine. Archbishop Nauman, I think one of the great churchmen today, was also in the video. He's the present Archbishop of KCK.

1:29.0

And then they had about five of my former students, because I've taught guys from that part of the world for years. And it was such a joy because some of these fellows I haven't seen in a long time or just occasionally.

1:41.0

And now they're all priests, you know, active and happy in their work in the church. And they were talking about the impact of my teaching at Monday Night.

1:49.0

So, I must say it was a wonderful joy to watch that video and hear, especially from these young priests. But the Lumin Vita, it's a lovely medal they give you. And it's based on the St. Benedict cross.

2:03.0

So, it's a great event. And about an hour and a half after the event, I had a receiving line of people that had worked with work on fire and used our material. So, it was just a great evening.

2:15.0

It's wonderful. It kind of lends right into our topic today, which is evangelizing the culture. I think that Lumin Vita obviously means bringing the light of Christ into the world.

2:28.0

So, in today's episode, we're going to continue our discussion regarding the eight principles of the word on fire movement.

2:34.0

The pillars of the lifestyle and really a way of seeing the world by which we at word on fire live.

2:40.0

In the last episode, we discussed Christos Tentrism, a practice by which we make a really concentrated effort to make Christ the center of our life, and surrender to what he hopes to give.

2:52.0

So, in following up on the previous discussion today, Bishop Baron and I are going to discuss the second of the eight principles.

2:58.0

And I think in large part, one of the defining differences between word on fire and many other apostolists, that is evangelizing the culture.

3:06.0

And not as a sort of blanket that overtakes the culture, but rather a seed that is planted that blooms from within.

3:15.0

We really focus on an add extra evangelization, meaning that we keep the peripheries always in our view.

3:22.0

We understand that the arts and culture are a powerful means by which not only to engage many who wouldn't enter a church, but also a vibrant way to spread the gospel.

3:33.0

So, to start, Bishop, maybe we ought to begin by asking what we mean by evangelization and what we mean by culture.
