Summary

One of the most popular forms of content at Word on Fire continues to be Bishop Robert Barron's theological commentaries about movies. In fact, the very first Youtube video Word On Fire ever produced was a commentary on Martin Scorsese's Oscar-Winning film, "The Departed." Since then, the bishop has reviewed dozens of movies and received high praise for his spiritual interpretations, even from the films' own directors. So for this episode, we thought we would ask Bishop Barron to share his ideas about two recent movies, namely, "Doctor Strange" and "Hacksaw Ridge" (SPOILER ALERT). The listener question asks where we Christians should draw the line for viewing graphic content.

Topics Discussed

  • 0:17  - Introduction, Cubs win the World Series
  • 5:45 - What is the premise of "Doctor Strange"? (Spoiler Alert)
  • 9:12 - How does "Doctor Strange" participate in the religious tradition?
  • 12:49 - How do modern films profess a kind of Gnostic spirituality?
  • 18:40 - What is the premise of "Hacksaw Ridge"? (Spoiler Alert)
  • 21:39 - How does "Hacksaw Ridge" witness to both a violent and nonviolent fight against evil?
  • 24:36 - How is the protagonist in "Hacksaw Ridge" a man of the bible?
  • 26:04 - Question from listener: Where should Christians draw the line when it comes to graphic content in art?

of the most exciting moments in the history of Chicago culture, your Chicago guy. I know

0:27.6

you must have been excited. Tell us what happened and what it meant to you.

0:31.6

Well, I happened to be in Chicago when the Cubs won the penitent. I was home for a family

0:35.5

wedding and for some other things, and I was coming back from the reception. I remember

0:40.8

I was following the game. That's when they won the penitent. I knew they were ahead. I

0:46.0

hadn't heard about the end of the game, but coming back to the hotel on the highway, I

0:51.4

began to see fireworks going off over Chicago, and I knew the Cubs had won the penitent.

0:55.9

That was great. The penitent is what for non-baseball fans?

1:00.2

Yeah, when they win the national league. That's the semi-finals before the World Series.

1:06.4

Right. I think given baseball, especially, there's something about winning the penitent

1:11.3

that has a lot of caches. That was great. I'm a typical Cubs fan, Lord. You gave us that.

1:21.2

That's probably asking too much when the World Series. Thank you for this gift.

1:26.3

Anyway, then I come back to LA and the series is going on. Of course, the Cubs get down

1:32.2

three games to one. Every Cubs fan, believe me, in the world, they're all right. Here we

1:37.7

go. They lost two games at Riggly Field. Anyway, we were all pretty depressed. Then they

1:45.4

win a game at Riggly. Three to two. Now we're going back to Cleveland. We got to win two

1:50.4

games in Cleveland. Then they win game six. We're like, okay, okay, but this is a setup for

1:58.5

the perfect Cubs. The last game, I was actually here at my house and I had a guest for dinner.
