Summary

October 31st, 2016 marked the beginning of the 500th year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which is decidedly the greatest split in Christian Church history. Pope Francis traveled to Sweden that Halloween weekend to meet with Lutheran Church leaders, commemorate the historical significance of the Reformation, and emphasize unity amongst the Christian faithful. In today's episode, Bishop Barron offers a brief history of the Reformation and explains his hopes for continued dialogue between Protestants and Catholics. The listener question asks about St. Augustine's views on the theological topic of predestination.

Welcome back to the Word on Fire Show. I'm Brandon Vott. I'm excited to be here with you. I'm the

0:08.4

content director at Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. And joining us today after a couple weeks off

0:14.2

is Bishop Robert Barron. Bishop Barron, welcome. We're glad to have you. Brandon always good to be with you.

Now today's topic you could say is 500 years in the making. This October 31st, so Halloween marks

0:29.6

the beginning of the 500th year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which was probably the

0:36.4

greatest split in the history of Christianity. We're going to get into that in a moment, but interestingly,

0:42.6

you recently got to spend some time with one of the most prominent Protestant leaders. So tell us

0:48.2

about that. Yeah. Just a couple days ago, I went to see Rick Warren, Pastor Rick Warren, as you say,

0:54.8

one of the best known and best-selling authors in the Christian world. Someone coming up out of the

1:02.1

Evangelical Protestant tradition, someone I've admired for a long time. We'd had some contact over

1:07.8

the years by email and various things. He knows about my Catholicism series. Of course, I know about

1:13.3

his work, but we met for the first time just a couple days ago at his studio in Orange County.

1:19.6

The purpose of that was to tape a show on this issue of assisted suicide. So in California now,

1:28.5

it's legal, and this law is about to go into full effect that one can legally kill oneself in

1:36.6

the state of California with the assistance of a physician. Many of the Christian churches, of

1:41.8

course, are militating against this. So Rick and I appeared on a few, few, it's a show to speak out

1:49.2

against it. It was a very moving experience for me. He was coming at it from a particular angle,

1:56.0

putting a great stress on the death by suicide of his son, which he's talked about, of course,

2:01.3

very extensively over the years, and the issue of mental illness and so on. I brought to bear a lot

2:06.8

of the themes of the Catholic tradition around this issue, but anyway, we did that together, and then

2:12.5

he gave me a tour of his personal office and library there, and did that chance to bond with him,

2:18.5

and it was a great experience. I mentioned that we're getting now into the 500th year anniversary of
