Summary

As Bishop Barron shows in his new book, Vibrant Paradoxes, Catholicism is both/and, not either/or. It celebrates the union of contraries—grace and nature, faith and reason, Scripture and tradition, body and soul—in a way that the full energy of each opposing element remains in place. In this episode, Bishop Barron explores several examples of this both/and embrace. A listener asks about the difficult passage in Acts 5 involving Ananias and Sapphira.

Topics Discussed

  • 0:22 - Exciting upcoming events for Bishop Barron

Welcome back to the Word on Fire show. I'm Brandon Vott and once again I am joined by Bishop

0:08.6

Robert Barron, Bishop Barron. We love having you. So welcome.

0:12.2

Brandon, it's always a joy to be with you. Tell us a little bit about some exciting events

0:17.2

that you've recently been invited to over the last month or so.

0:21.1

Yeah, I was invited to go to an event at the Vatican in early June and it's a jubilee

0:29.6

for priests for the year of mercy. And as I understand it, the idea is they're going to gather

0:35.0

priests all over the world and they've asked someone in each major language group to address

0:40.2

the priests on the theme of mercy. So they told me it's going to be in one of the major

0:46.1

churches in what they call the Centro Stodico of Rome, the historical center. So somewhere

0:53.1

right in the heart of the city. So that'll be in June and the next day the Pope is going

0:59.3

to give talks to all the priests gathered there. So I was very excited about that. I got

1:03.6

the invitation several months ago now. And then just about 10 days ago to my great surprise,

1:08.6

I was invited to give Catecheses at the World Youth Day in Crockow. And tell me the truth,

1:14.5

you know, I had thought about it. There's a couple of years ago when I heard it was going

1:18.1

to be in Crockow. I thought it'd be great to go there, John Paul to his hometown. But then,

1:22.7

you know, I really forgot about it. So they invited me to give these Catecheses. So I was

1:29.0

overjoyed to accept even though it means two big trips to Europe within about a six-week period.

1:36.0

And then I was invited. I'm very pleased about this for 2017 to give the Erasmus lecture,

1:41.6

which is a major lecture sponsored by the folks over at First Things. It's held in New York. And

1:48.1

this past year it was Roth's Dalphit gave the lecture. And prior to him, it was Archbishop

1:53.6

Shephew of Philadelphia. So I was very honored to be asked that would be kind of a more serious

1:58.9

academic lecture. So anyway, all these events are coming up. Well, today we're talking about the
