Good morning and welcome to the Independent Republic of Mike Graham right here on Talk Radio. The Leicester lockdown is now taking effect, and there's quite a few mumblings and grumblings about it for some reason, which I find quite surprising.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, announced last night that after 11 days of study, the government has decided to take this precaution because of a spike in coronavirus cases in that East Midland City.

The anti-lockdown brigade say it is an overreaction. But then they would say that,

wouldn't they? Surely the point is that if this is going to happen, it's better to deal with it

rationally, calmly and with a degree of common sense, which of course is what we have in bucket

loads here at the Independent Republic of Mike Graham. If there are new outbreaks in one city,

it makes perfect sense, does it not, to disencourage people from going to the pub.

But if you're fairly sure they're not going to listen, then you have to keep the pubs closed,

don't you?

If you saw what happened at the beaches over the last couple of weeks, if you saw what happened

on those marches over the past month or so, if you saw what happened with those raves in

various cities, with the violence breaking out in Brixton, with people

attacking the police, with people seemingly behaving like complete and utter morons, it does

seem rather clear that in some instances in this country, the people are too stupid to know

what to do. So the government has to tell them what to do, and in order to make that work properly,

particularly in a place like Leicester, then they need to

ask them to stay indoors for another couple of weeks. I don't think that's too much to ask, is it?

It's two more weeks and it's probably also a practice run for what happens if the same thing is

required somewhere else. I'm not going to sit here and say the government is doing the wrong thing.

It's all very well saying the risk is small that anyone is going to catch the virus, but that risk is clearly higher in Leicester at the moment. We'd love to hear
