Summary

An inspired effort from a clearly hobbled Anthony Davis and a very efficient scoring night from Russell Westbrook weren't enough for the Lakers to hang in with Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets on Sunday, all but ending the Lakers chances at the play-in game in the process. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss both the game and the season at large, breaking down how some of the positives weren't enough and the negatives were too much to overcome and how the losses piled up because of it. Later, the guys get into how expectations played a big role in the demise of the team.

What do you think about the Laker team now?

0:03.4

You follow the box scores of the games every day?

0:06.0

Just the Lakers.

0:07.3

You're kidding.

0:08.6

That is really a compliment.

0:12.8

I was pleased to see you smile at the top bar show because once the game starts, you have a game face.

0:17.8

You don't smile much out there.

0:20.4

I don't think you have to do things for money anymore. Correct. What's up, Laker fans? Welcome to the Laker Filmroom podcast, brought you by the Blue R. Podcast Network. I'm Pete, joined by Darius and Mike. It's nice to have a full house tonight. And part of the reason I'm happy about that is, Mike, in the last episode, you weren't on, but we talked a little bit about how that felt like the death knell.

That was a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, who the Lakers are battling for a play in spot with San Antonio Spurs in the mix as well.

And when the Lakers lost that game, not having the tiebreaker against them

0:55.2

and not having the tiebreaker against San Antonio, it put it pretty close to out of reach.

1:00.6

You know, the Lakers had to go, you know, good 5 and 0, 4 and 1 at worst in the last five games

1:05.9

against a pretty tough schedule. And then they played this game today, an afternoon game

1:09.3

against Denver that LeBron

1:10.8

James did not play in. Anthony Davis did play, and he gutted it out, but was definitely not

1:16.3

100 percent and gave what he could. Russ played pretty well, but as has been the case many

1:22.0

times this season, just the team was not good enough. We did not have enough to win the game.

1:28.3

And thusly, putting even more of a punctuation mark, I think, on this season. Lakers, the Spurs,

1:35.8

their magic number is now down to two. So any combination of a Spurs win and or Lakers

1:41.7

loss, and then that gets knocked down to nothing. So we're real close to on the brink, Mike. It seems pretty inevitable at this point that the Lakers will not even make the play in game. So we could talk about the game today if you'd like a bit. But I think I'd want to start there is like, here we are, here we are, just right on the verge of the Lakers, not making the playoffs at all.

2:02.8

Yeah, the magic number is two, basically.

2:04.9

So any combination of Lakers losses or spurs wins over the course of the final eight,
