Summary

There's been a lot of talk about quantum computing lately, but what exactly is it, and what are some practical applications that it may have? These are just a few of the topics discussed by William Hurley, CEO of Strange works, which is a company that launched earlier this year during a South by Southwest Keynote presentation and raised $4 million just in seed money.

The main goal of the company is to make quantum computing technology more understandable to the layperson and more accessible to developers. Right now, the Strangeworks platform offers developers and enterprises a way to become familiar with the technology by performing quantum experiments, as well as a timeline of the likely advances in this technology. Hurley believes that within 24 to 36 months, quantum computing will be usable and produce real enterprise outcomes.

Quantum computing has come a long way in the past few years, but it has a ways to go. Among many other topics, Hurley discusses what he believes to be the two main factors holding back quantum computing: high cost and the unsolved problem of error correction. Despite the challenges, the potential of quantum computing is exciting and has the potential to change the world.

Hello, this is Richard Jacobs with the Future Tech Podcasts. My guest today is William Hurley, called Wirley, the CEO of Strange Works. Strange Works, according to the notes, it launched earlier this year during a South by Southwest keynote and the company has raised four million dollars in seed round.

They form some partnerships as they say with IBM Cern and Stack Overflow.

And they're going to be offering a subscription service that allows developers to run quantum experiences on a number of simulators and emulators and

0:57.2

it sounds like they've got a quantum computer or two stuck in their in their

pocket that people can use so it looks like a like an Amazon web

services for quantum computing at first blush but I'm going to ask more about it

1:09.8

so William how you doing? I'm doing great. Thanks for having me on today.

1:13.0

Yeah so you know I'm never as good at explaining things as the

1:17.0

CEOs or founders so tell me you know let's step back again talk to me about

1:21.2

Strange works where did the concept come from and what's the premise of the company?

1:26.0

So personally I've been looking into Quantum competing for about five years before we started the company and making some minor investments for about three.

1:33.5

I'm fascinated with the technology and I had sold my last company to Goldman Sachs.

1:38.7

I was looking at you know doing the startup thing again that's kind of my forte and I really wanted to get into

1:45.6

quantum computing and I did a bunch of research and saw that you know this is

1:50.4

something that's been talked about for decades and it was seen to me like the timing was

1:57.5

starting to get right. I mean if you look at the history you had the this Salvoy Conference in 1927 with Heisenberg and you know I'm Simon Schrodinger where the quantum mechanics thing kind of came into being and then you know in 82 you had Benny off and Fineman kind of come up with the idea of using the spin of a particle, you know, as a bit if you will.

2:19.0

And then there was kind of nothing.
