Is the AstraZeneca vaccine safe? That depends perhaps which age group you're in. As we've had

two announcements today regarding the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, one from the European

Medicines Agency, which suggests it was safe in all age groups. And then we also had an

announcement from the MHRA, who have suggested that under 30s are to be offered an alternative

COVID jab to the AstraZeneca vaccine. However, when you go to your local GP clinical hospital

to get this, and they don't have an alternative jab, but you will still be offered the Oxford vaccine.

Kate, can you talk us for you the announcement?

Ultimately, there's a lot of talk in the press comments we just had,

which was headed by Jonathan Van Tam, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer,

this idea that they're not saying the Oxford vaccine is unsafe,

they're saying that it's still a very rare blood clot condition,

but ultimately it's coming down to this risk age assessment.

Yeah, so this was a really mixed bag of updates from the European Medicines Agency.

On the one hand, saying that rare blood clots should be added to the list of symptoms,

which feels like a significant

moment for this vaccine, but it also doubled down on the idea that the vaccine was safe.
