Why the government is suing Walmart.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is accusing Walmart and the fintech firm branch messenger

of cheating some Walmart gig workers.

The CFPB sued the two companies yesterday

as Marketplace's Nancy Marshall-Genzor reports. The CFPB complaint involves gig drivers who take

packages the last mile from Walmart stores to customers' homes. The complaint says Walmart and

Branch opened the branch accounts using the driver's social security

numbers without their consent and told them they had to use Branch in order to get paid

and workers who refused would be fired. The CFPB says drivers had to go through a complex process

to get their money and face delays or fees if they transferred the money into a different account.

The agency says the drivers wound up paying more than $10 million in fees to immediately transfer

their money. Walmart and Branch Messenger both told Reuters they reject the accusations in the
