How did that man gain such an important foothold with Trump?

Well, you know, the answer, and this is kind of the narrative structure of the book, is that they met each other in 2010. They were brought

operative kind of specializes in anti Clinton stuff.

And Trump had met Bossie at some kind of charity

deal.
