Summary

Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers' edge rushers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith both scored touchdowns, sacked the quarterback and were huge factors in the Steelers' win over the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football. But Pro Football Focus grades them to have not been as good of players as Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett who had a tackle and a quarterback hit. Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Locked on Steelers podcast explains why PFF's grades are skewed on the wrong analytics, and responds to a shot taken by Sam Monson of PFF, saying that Myles Garrett was a better player than Watt or Highsmith. Watch/listen to Chris Carter's breakdown on why analytics can sometimes take too big a foothold in the coverage of the NFL and football as a sport, and why sometimes we need to remind ourselves why players are more important than stats. Hey, everyone, I'm Chris Carter, host of the Lockdown Steelers podcast, also from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, with a bonus episode here from the Lockdown Steelers podcast.

0:11.2

And I want to just talk about a discussion that we kind of had during the week as far as something that I talked about on Twitter.

0:16.8

It didn't talk as much about during the show because with the hustle and bust of the show, sometimes we can't get the stuff. And that's revolving around PFF grades and kind of the back

0:23.7

and forth that happened on what grades should be what and how T.J. Watt versus Miles Garrett,

0:29.5

a lot of conversations there. So if you're interested in that, hang in there because this is

0:33.2

going to be a discussion about that where I go over some numbers and kind of break down what I think

0:37.9

fans should really know when we're talking about PFF grades, how to analyze players, et cetera,

0:42.5

et cetera.

0:42.8

So again, this is back to the Steelers Brown's Monday night football game.

0:46.1

The Steelers win 26 to 22 largely because they're outside linebackers, their edge rushers.

0:50.5

T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith dominated the game.

0:53.2

Both scored touchdowns. Alex Highsmith on a pick six. He also forced a fumble that resulted in T.J. Watts touchdown. Both got a sack. Both Alex Highsmith had seven tackles. T.J. Watt had four tackles. Both had six or more pressures. And so they were dominant. They were the main reason the Steelers won the game,

1:12.0

even with their other parts of the defense struggling at times.

1:15.6

And that was a huge part of the game.

1:17.4

And at the same token, on the other side of the other team,

1:20.3

you had Miles Garrett, who had a good game, just not as great.

1:23.1

He had one tackle, I think three quarterback pressures, you know,

1:25.6

solid, but not as dominant as those guys.

1:28.3

So after the game, you're thinking probably like I was thinking like, okay, well, those two guys were

1:32.8

clearly the best players in the field. But according to PFF, that wasn't the case. PFF, of course,

1:38.4

is pro football focus, a database that goes on and, you know, analyzes football, gives people

1:43.1

grades about how they
