Summary

Mark Chapman is joined by The Athletic's David Ornstein, Adam Crafton and Art De Roche to assess the situation Arsenal find themselves in after they were well beaten by Chelsea on Sunday leaving them pointless and goalless two games into the new season. With Mikel Arteta approaching two years in the job we look at the reasons why his team feels further away than ever from being where they need to be, the issues the club have had with recruitment and the structure above Arteta that may also be responsible for the problems.

We're also joined by The Athletic's Chelsea writer Liam Twomey to reflect on an impressive outing from Romelu Lukaku on his return to the club and look ahead to a greater challenge in Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.

All this plus news of Eddie Nketiah potentially leaving Arsenal this week, Kurt Zouma's impending move to West Ham, and an update on the latest with the Harry Kane situation.

Hello, I'm Mark Chapman, welcome to the Athletic Football Pod each week.

0:19.1

I'm joined by a selection of writers from

0:20.8

the Athletics to bring you on rivaled access and insight into the biggest stories in football.

0:26.8

I'm joined today by David Ornstein, Adam Crafton, the Athletics, Arsenal writer Art Dorosh,

0:31.6

and later we'll also speak to our Chelsea writer Liam Toomey.

0:34.7

The big game of the Premier League weekend was obviously at the

0:37.8

Emirates on Sunday. Chelsea beating Arsenal 2-0. Romolulu Le Carcu looking ominously good.

0:43.7

Oh, let me start with you then. For all the reasons why that might have been a weakened

0:47.7

Arsenal team, the performance was, well, I was going to say dire, but certainly the first half performance was

0:57.3

dire, wasn't it? Maybe it's slightly improved in the second. Yeah, I don't think many people

1:01.4

took that much encouragement from the second half performance either way because of what

1:05.8

happened in the first. And yeah, you mentioned, I guess, the amount of absences Arsenal had on the day, almost quite similar to the opening day against Brentford.

1:16.0

But the thing that counteracts that is Arsenal's performances have been quite, okay, maybe not dire as dire as it was against Chelsea yesterday.

1:26.2

But they haven't been great in preseason either

1:29.0

against Chelsea or Tottenham. That was with Albamian and Lacazette inside. There were still

1:34.3

those moments where they're struggling to break down low blocks. They're just very pedestrian.

1:40.8

And I think that's where a lot of, I guess, disappointment and frustration comes from

1:46.4

Arsenal fans. I mean, even though I guess it was the first time that Emirates could have

1:52.0

been at full capacity since the start of the pandemic. You could clearly see that it wasn't at full

1:57.9

capacity. And I think that's just been born out of, yeah, frustration and just not seeing progress

2:06.2

that I guess fans would have wanted to see at this point of Mikata's reign.
