They finally landed on a defensive coordinator hire.

0:26.6

It's Shane Bowen.

0:27.7

Now, the Giants had interviewed Bowen previously.

The Giants were rumored to be interested in a couple other coordinators,

0:34.1

our Wilson, who ended up going to the Titans, coincidentally, and Babbage,

0:39.3

who ended up signing or, you know, getting promoted from within to the bills.

0:43.1

Some may view this as a fallback option, Nick, but I like this higher.

And I do think Shane Bowen brings something that the other two candidates who, or at least

reportedly, though, I don't know if I believe those reports, whatever, viewed as top options for the Giants, maybe they're first and second option. I don't know. We don't know if that's true. We can just assume that, but we don't know, is that he has defensive coordinator experience, and that is he has experience calling plays. To me, that mattered. I always felt like when Jerome Henderson got his due and he got his discussion is a potential canon for the giants. I was always like, yes and no, because I do get concerned with a guy having to call plays.

We've discussed this on the pod like multiple times, Nick, usually on the offense side of the ball, but we've just with your past, obviously, you know, in football. We discussed like how fast and how quick things are when you're calling plays. It's not like I don't think these guys are capable of doing it, Jerome Henderson, whatnot.

It's just a matter of you never really know until you put him under the fire.

1:31.4

With Bowen, you know.

1:32.4

He's done it before.

And to be quite frank, I mean, we have the numbers on it. We're going to go over a lot of numbers, by the way, in this podcast that we already went over at one point when we discussed the possibility of hiring Shane Bowen, but there are new listeners. And a lot of you probably, you know, may not even remember that pod. It was a few weeks.

1:32.3

It was maybe a month ago at this point. So it's worth reiterating some of the numbers, some of the stats. But he did coordinate, you know, one of the best defenses in football during the 2021 season with the Tennessee Titans. In that season, they finished 12 and 5, Bowles promoted to defensive coordinator. They won the AFC South. They were the number one seed in the AFC. The defense was one of the best in the NFL, fourth and fewest touchdowns allowed for a game, fourth best red zone defense in 2021 under Bowen, six best third down defense. These are the money downs, zone and third down. And then six been best and

just total points per game. So top six across the board in the four most important categories in my mind to evaluate a defense. I always find total yardage, which people always say total defense. I always find that pretty lame because some defense are bend don't break. Some defense are designed to give up yards. Some defense are giving up yards because their offense is giving them before touchdown lead.
