Why do dogs eat poop? It’s known as coprophagia and how to stop it is a popular question. Poop eating in dogs is more common than you might think. When your dog eats their own poop or another dog's poop, it can be distressing, and if it's out in public, downright embarrassing! I'm walking you through the three main reasons behind coprophagia, what worked to stop my puppy Prophet from eating poop, and why I think my dog Encore started when she was six years old and the resolve. None of us want our dogs to snack on poop, and understanding is the first step in helping them.

If you could think of all of the habits or antics that your puppy or dog could do, that might

0:07.5

embarrass you in front of your friends and family, what might they be? What would be the first

0:11.9

thing that would come to your mind? It could be maybe a puppy that peas on your neighbor's

0:17.6

carpet or your family member's carpet and that could be a little bit embarrassing.

0:21.5

It could be your dog humping your guests as they come through the front door. Sure,

0:26.2

that could be a little embarrassing. I think one at or near the top of things your dog could

0:31.9

do to embarrass you might be eating poop, eating their own poop, eating other dogs poop, eating poop. That's got to be

0:39.8

at the top, right? Well, today we're going to talk about that topic and what that might mean about

0:44.6

your dog and how you can overcome that problem. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to shape by dog. A dog eating poop. It's called coprophasia. And that's a big

1:05.8

fancy name to basically say your dog eats poop. Now, some dogs love to eat other dogs poop. Some

1:12.2

dogs like to eat their own poop. A lot of dogs like to eat other animal poops. But today

1:16.5

we're talking about dogs who eat their own poop or a dog that lives within their poop.

1:22.0

And there's really three categories of reasons why this might be happening to your dog.

1:26.9

And what I want you to think about

1:29.3

as we do in many of these episodes is I want you to consider a reframe on what's happening.

1:36.2

So you might say, ew, that's disgusting. Why do you like the taste of poop? Why are you

1:40.9

doing that? I want you to consider that your dog doesn't like the taste of it.

1:44.4

Well, that's weird. Why would he do it? I think there's three categories of reasons why he might

1:48.6

be doing. Number one, it could be curiosity. If you have a young puppy, it's novel. What's this?

1:53.4

Oh my goodness. So, it could just be something to play with. It could be something they put in their

1:57.6

mouth. It could just be a phase of curiosity that they're going through.

2:01.0

The second reason could be a health reason in that it is a gut biome problem. It could be a
