In the early part of her career, Patricia Regan found herself in rooms advocating for other creatives, mostly men,

before realizing that she didn't just want to help other people achieve their artistic visions,

she wanted to tell stories of her own. Her latest project is a big budget, big action thriller,

Prime Videos, G20, starring Viola Davis as the president of the United States,

becomes the number one target when an annual meeting of world leaders comes under siege.

Patrice explains how and why she never enters an edit without every piece of footage she needs,

the principle that allows her to make what for others might be hard calls about what to keep and what

to leave on the cutting room floor, the benefits of working with her cinematographer husband,

and why the success or failure of a film like G20 has consequences not just for her, but for other women directors. Patricia, thanks so much for doing this.

At this point in your career, how does a project like G20 come to you?

Normally, the way the industry works is that we get sent scripts and we basically compete against anybody.

This kind of project normally doesn't come to a woman because it's a big action movie.

That was the first thing I was attracted to.

It was the fact that it was an action movie.

And I think the reason why I was considered was because it was a female-led movie.

It was Viola Davis.

And most likely the reason why I was hired was that it was Viola Davis, who is a woman of color.

So she had no issues with another woman of color coming in to direct her.

That's how it happened.

You know, I got this script.

I thought it was a really cool idea.
