| 0:00.0 | Hello everyone welcome back to the epic gardening podcast today we're talking about the humble |
| 0:05.7 | radish one of the best little garden poppers out there and when I say poppers I mean you can pop them into little nooks and crannies in your beds or you can just pop them out of the soil into your mouth or into a salad or some sort of fermented action. |
| 0:20.0 | So today we're talking about why they don't bulb up. |
| 0:23.0 | And so there's four different reasons why this might be happening. |
| 0:26.0 | And of course there's more than four, but these are the four most common that I've run into. |
| 0:30.0 | So let's go ahead and figure this out. |
| 0:32.0 | The first one is going to be too little sunlight. |
| 0:35.2 | A lot of people consider radish to be a winter crop, fall winter, early spring crop. |
| 0:40.1 | Certainly that's true, but they do want as much sun as you can give them you know |
| 0:45.0 | four plus hours minimum I would say definitely six is preferable or even more |
| 0:50.4 | so if you're not giving them enough sun, they can't photosynthesize and they cannot make enough energy in order to actually bulb up that route. |
| 1:00.0 | So I would just increase the sun. That's my first tip. Number two, too much nitrogen in the |
| 1:05.1 | soil, not enough phosphorus and not enough potassium. Nitrogen, as we know, really big contributor |
| 1:10.3 | to leafy green growth, the actual vegetation of a plant, whereas phosphorus and |
| 1:15.0 | potassium are used in much higher amounts during the fruiting or the flowering or the |
| 1:20.9 | bulbing phases of a plant's growth. |
| 1:23.4 | So if you're having a lot of tops and not a lot of bulbous roots, |
| 1:29.1 | well then it's probably the case of too much nitrogen. |
| 1:31.8 | So you can fix that by adding a little bit more of |
| 1:34.4 | potassium or phosphorus or you can just sort of amend and hope that you sort of bring down that percentage of |
| 1:41.7 | nitrogen in the soil. |
| 1:43.0 | Next is going to be temperature. |
