1:06.0 | So I write about urban policy for the Times, which means I write about transportation, among other things, and sort of how people use it and how we get around and how important it is to our lives. |
1:17.0 | And this one very apparent pattern keeps coming up over and over again, which is that there has been this traffic safety |
1:26.0 | crisis in America affecting in particular pedestrians. |

1:35.0 | years throughout the 80s the 90s the early 2000s roads in America were becoming safer and safer for pedestrians and |
1:36.8 | then something changes around 2009 all of a sudden roads start to become more dangerous year over year to the point where more |
1:44.4 | than 3,000 additional pedestrians died in 2021 compared to 2009. |
1:50.4 | And it's this incredible mystery for a number of reasons. |
1:53.6 | One of them is that we don't see anything like this in other industrialized countries. |
1:59.0 | You know, we don't see pedestrian deaths rising. |
2:01.6 | If anything, they're falling in other countries. |
2:04.3 | So in this mystery, you know, there's something particular to the United States going on. |
