Imagine you're standing on the shore of a large lake, the water shimmering in the sunlight,

surrounding the lake or tall green trees, your eight years old, and your mom is right

by your side.

A few feet away, other people from the community are also starting to gather.

You're part of the Anishinaabek First Nations Indigenous Group in Canada, and today,

you and your mom are doing one of your favorite things, attending a water ceremony.

Water ceremonies are sacred.

They're performed to give thanks to the water, to acknowledge that all life depends on

water.

Without water, none of us would be here.

Your mom gives you a small smile.

She's always taught you that water is alive, and has its own spirit.
