Summary

I am delighted to share the very first episode of Transatlantic: An Irish American History Podcast. It's a new show I am making with historian Damian Shiels which looks at Irish-American History. It's separate from the Irish History Podcast and Season 1 will be released each Monday. You can subscribe to Transatlantic: An Irish American History Podcast to get future shows. In this first episode we look at who the first Irish person to reach the Americas was. There are a few intriguing candidates.

  • Was it St. Brendan, the intrepid Irish monk who is said to have voyaged across the Atlantic centuries before Columbus?
  • Could it have been an Irish woman taken captive by Vikings who reached Newfoundland around 1000 AD?
  • Perhaps it was an Irish sailor aboard one of Columbus' ships?

Next week I will be back with the Irish History Podcast with a show on the House of Malcomson, a dramatic story about the rise and fall of an Irish dynasty known of the Cotton Kings.

Meanwhile the second episode of Transatlantic whcih looks at the Forgotten Irish Witch of Boston comes out next Monday and will be available here https://linktr.ee/transatlanticpod.

Hello and

0:05.0

this week I am really excited to invite you to join me on a new podcast journey.

0:14.0

So while the Irish History Podcast is going to continue as normal,

0:18.0

over the last six months, I've been busy recording episodes of a new show.

0:22.0

I'm delighted to share the first episode of that

0:25.1

new show with you today but you'll find links of how you can subscribe and get

0:28.8

further episodes below. I'm delighted to share the first episode of that new show with you here today, but first just let me explain a little bit about it.

0:38.0

So it's going to be very different from the Irish History Podcast.

0:41.0

It's a joint project with historian Damien Shields and it's called Transatlantic, an Irish

0:45.7

American history podcast. Now many of you are going to know Damien, he's an expert on Irish involvement

0:50.8

in the American Civil War and he's been on the Irish history podcast multiple times.

0:55.0

But last February we started exploring the idea of making a new podcast together

1:00.0

and over the last six or seven months we recorded the first season.

1:04.0

So in this first episode which I'm exclusively sharing here

1:08.0

we explore who was the first Irish person to cross the Atlantic.

1:12.0

Now the answer to that is a lot older than you might imagine and it's not the person I think a lot of you will expect it to be and that made for a really great conversation.

1:21.0

As you're going to hear, the structure of Transatlantic and

1:24.0

Irish American history podcast, as I've said, is pretty different to the Irish

1:27.6

history podcast. It's not scripted and it's based around conversations between

1:31.6

Damien and myself.

1:33.3

I think the best thing I can do is just let you listen to the first episode.

1:37.4

Now if you are wondering what happens to the Irish History Podcast, as I said earlier,

...
