Welcome to the news and why it matters. I am Sarah Gonzales and today the Impeachment Trial

of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has come to a close in the political fate of Paxton

in the hands of the Texas Senate. 30 senators are now deliberating on 16 articles of

impeachment ranging from bribery, conspiracy, dereliction of duty, and misuse of public office

among other accusations. It's been over 100 years since the last impeachment proceeding of an

elected official in Texas, so how do we get here? Well, back in 2028, so-called whistleblowers

went to the FBI to accuse Paxton of serious crimes. Some of them resigned, some were fired later,

and four went on to sue the office of the Attorney General for violating whistleblower retaliation

laws by firing them. The OAG asked the Texas legislature to settle the lawsuit presumably because

it would be much cheaper than, well, what we've just seen play out over the last nine days, but

the House didn't do that. Why? Well, we'll get into that. House impeachment managers painted a

sexy and salacious tale of Ken Paxton allowing his friend and campaign donor Nate Paul to essentially

run the agency after the FBI raided Paul's home and offices as part of a probe into his business
