War, what is it good for? Well, according to the chorus of that song, absolutely nothing.

But if I took my advice from the chorus of pop songs, I would never have chased that

waterfall, which was quite satisfying to acquire and look at. War is good for winners,

usually. Well, almost always better than for the losers. But there's a more specific question

brought up by the city and battle of Bakmut. What was that particular part of the Ukraine war

good for? We were told when the battle raged not much. Russia will have it most occurring victory,

having expended a great deal of resources and manpower on a city that is not really strategically

important to the Ukraine war. It's a town many Western allies say is strategically

unimportant and yet it's become the sole focus of Putin's military effort since October.

Politically, if they lose it, Kiev has really got to manage the loss of this place.

Milaterally, they shouldn't worry too much.

Sky TV, French 24 TV and task in purpose with those assessments and they were right, except

they weren't. We now know what it was good for. Bakmut was good for killing Russians.

An estimated 30,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded here. For a city,

military analysts agree has little strategic value.

Now as a few days ago, we now have more reliable figures and there that 20,000 Russians were killed.
