| 1:02.0 | Today is June 19th also known as Juneteenth, which is not a national holiday, although I would be willing to bet that it will be soon if things go the way they're going right now. |
| 1:14.0 | And on this Juneteenth were in the midst of I think one of the most remarkable moments of sort of racial reckoning the countries had in my adult lifetime. |
| 1:23.0 | You've had the longest and most widespread sustained protests for racial equity and against police brutality and for racial justice that I've ever seen in my lifetime. |
| 1:34.0 | The crowds that have been in the streets have been coming out despite a pandemic, which has been nerve-wracking for many, including myself, although a lot of them have been masked early reports seem to indicate that the testing shows that it hasn't been a super spreader event so far as we know. |
| 1:48.0 | But of course they've been on the streets in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and there's kind of these intersecting crises in the country. |
| 1:54.0 | There is of course the pandemic and the health crisis, which has as we get more and more data disproportionately affected black and brown Americans, particularly African Americans as well indigenous communities. |
| 2:05.0 | The data on this is just pretty nuts in terms of death rates, infection rates, hospitalization rates, how much it's decimated black America. |
| 2:14.0 | If you look at a city like Montgomery, Alabama, 90% of the folks that are hospitalized there are African American. |
| 2:20.0 | We've got an economic crisis that's born of the pandemic and the efforts to fight it, which is also disproportionately fallen on sort of bottom 25 to 35% of the quarter of workers essentially, which is another category of Americans that disproportionately black and brown. |
| 2:39.0 | And then of course we have the crisis of police brutality, which of course is inextricably bound up with race. |
| 2:46.0 | So all of these things are happening at the same time, all of them kind of like sinking the axe wedge into the central cleavage in American and American history and kind of cracking open a lot. |
| 3:00.0 | And there's also of course the person at the top Donald Trump, who as I'm speaking you today is preparing a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who is a bigot and probably the most openly, flagrantly racist president that we've had since maybe Woodrow Wilson, I would say. |
