Summary

Kevin asks an important question for bloggers, podcasters, and anyone who is just starting to build an audience: how specific should you be? Do you want to focus on a narrow niche, or is it better to be broad? If you have a question about building an audience for your blog or podcast, record it at http://www.askpat.com/. Hey, what's up, everybody?

0:12.1

This is Pat Flynn, and welcome to episode 35 of Ask Pat.

I'm here to help answer your online business and entrepreneurship questions five days a week.

And today we have a question from Kevin.

0:26.6

But before we get to that, I have a resource to share with you. And that is SEM rush.com.

0:31.1

This is a website, free tool that you can use. And it's a website you can go to to enter either a specific keyword or a specific URL for a website and get a whole bunch of information about that.

0:37.2

So for instance, if you

0:37.9

were to put a keyword, it will tell you other related keywords, how often those keywords are

0:42.5

being searched for, how much advertiser paying for those keywords, competitors, and other, you know,

0:46.8

a lot of great information about that. And of course, if you put a URL in there, it'll tell you

0:50.5

what keywords that page is ranking for, you know, it's competitors and, again, other stuff related to that particular niche as well.

0:58.0

So that's a great tool to use.

0:59.1

Again, that's SEMRush.com, free to use, no affiliates or emails required or anything like that, which is pretty cool.

1:06.1

Now, let's get to today's question from Kevin, which has to do with a website that he's looking to create,

1:11.7

actually a website and a podcast. So let's hear about it. Hi, Pat, Kevin McFarlane here. And first

1:16.9

all, I wanted to say, thank you. You've been an inspiration to me. You're inspiring me to

1:22.8

start a podcast this year and start a niche website. The niche website I'm planning to start

1:29.8

is an emergency room nursing website and podcast. And my question is a little bit about branding.

1:36.7

I am thinking about, like I said, starting an emergency nursing podcast. And I'm trying to figure out

1:41.8

whether I should brand my website as specifically for emergency nursing or give it a broader focus of nursing in general with hopes to expand later down the road.
