Yesterday you heard that Jacques's tomatoes, his corn, his peppers, and even his eggplants

0:20.2

are doing really well, and the question now is, Jacques, I have for you is why do you

0:24.4

think that is?

0:25.4

What did you do that's different than last year?

0:27.0

Right, so actually I'd say this year more than before, I've tried to consistently actually

0:34.0

build all my beds now in a low-till sort of lasagna method, and that seems to work really

0:41.6

well right now.

0:42.6

So, except for that bush bean bed, which we won't talk about right now, but basically

0:47.7

I've just been doing the very classic method of stacking carbon by using a lot of straw,

0:53.3

and then once I have that straw, I'll throw down a lot of nice, rich compost, and so that's

0:58.0

how I built my corn bed, that's how I built my pepper beds, my tomato beds, and all of

those are doing really, really, really wonderfully right now.

1:05.2

So, I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I'm not messing with the soil as much,

1:10.4

and I'm also adding in a lot of fertility through that compost.

1:14.8

And the nice thing about it too that I've noticed is that the beds that I've added, the straw

1:19.3

and the compost layer, have been the easiest in terms of water management.

1:23.4

So, that's a big part of it too, is that I've had more drip irrigation installed now

1:28.4

than I did before, I'm watering less by hand, and I think my soil is just doing a better

1:33.0

job of retaining all that water and nutrients, so that's a big part of it.

1:37.8

This year I also decided to change up my variety selection, so for example, in my Florida

1:43.3

weave, I have my two tomatoes that the seed packets cost $15 each, so I ended up paying

1:49.3

basically a dollar a seed, but man, I'll tell you, the first results from it are really
