Summary

"I identify with David: I, too, am a mixed bag. But it reminds me that I can't read this story with the idea that I'm supposed to be like David." Leaders set examples. They become examples: ideals to respect and emulate. The Bible is full of leaders—like David, a man after God's own heart. Samuel tells the story of David, but that's just a couple of chapters in a big book. What about the whole Bible? What's the story of the Bible and who's the hero? Learn how to read the Bible from https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/staff/keith-simon/ (Keith) as he covers https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Samuel+22-23&version=NIV (2 Samuel 22-23) to finish our series on https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/podcast-series/david-in-22-stories/ (David in 22). In this episode, we discuss David, Bathsheba, and Uriah. Welcome to Tim Minut Bible Talks, where we connect the Bible to your life and the time it takes to get to work.

I'm Keith Simon.

0:11.0

And I'm Patrick Miller. Right now we're working through the story of David's life in first and second Samuel

0:18.4

One of the ways I was taught to read the Bible when I first became a Christian in college, especially the Old

0:24.1

Testament stories in the Bible, was that you would read about a certain person and how they lived

0:28.6

and acted and then think, okay, I'm supposed to be more like them. So you know be a better leader like Moses or be more courageous like

0:36.7

Shadrack, Mechak, and a bingo, or be more faithful like Daniel or be a better leader

0:42.2

like Nehemiah and the problem with that is that I can never do it.

0:48.0

I mean there's all kinds of problems with it but just in my personal life the main problem was that it was like well thanks

0:55.0

but where do I get the power to do that I can't be like these people and then

1:00.5

there was also another problem is which part of them was I supposed to be like.

1:06.2

Was I supposed to be like the murder that Moses was?

1:10.8

Or impatient with God like he was?

1:14.0

Or was I supposed to be the fighter and the brawler

1:18.2

that Nehemiah was?

1:20.6

You see that there's this tension in the people in the Bible that they are far from perfect.

1:25.7

They're not like polished characters in a story.

1:29.7

They are real people with kind of flaws and baggage. They're mixed bags just like I am.

1:36.5

And not only could I not live up to their ideals and the best way they lived and acted, but I wasn't

1:42.4

sure that I really wanted to live up to all

1:44.8

parts of their life. I wasn't sure I was supposed to imitate all of that.

1:48.6

Somewhere along the line I was taught I don't not if was in seminary or just from a good book or I don't really know where to trace it back to my life, but I was taught that the hero of the Bible are not the individuals found in its pages but in God.
